Save the Date! Register for this don’t miss out event on Saturday, September 28, 2019
Join your fellow competitors after the race for an Experience that encompasses all that is northwest! Gather to share awards, food, beer, and rock out to harmonic rhythms while you revel in the hard work leading up to this day and event. You do not want to miss this!
The post race experience begins with the recognition of our amazing athletes. At 4:00 pm, the top three Iron athletes in each division and the top three teams in each division will receive a handmade ceramic award made by none other than Big Hurt athlete Gay Hunter. These awards are made from the heart, and adorned with this year’s artwork by local artist Craig Robinson.
A potlatch is a ceremonial gift-giving feast practiced by Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast to celebrate special events, often lasting several days with singing and dancing, feasting, and have ceremonial boasting. In holding to the potlatch tradition, the Elwha River Casino an affiliate of Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe is giving a gift to Big Hurt – a salmon bake dinner free to all participating athletes and volunteers. This family is no stranger to hosting delicious meals to large groups of athletes in the traditional yearly canoe journey events. háʔnəŋ cən há Thank-you!!
Additional food will be available for purchase from 1:00 pm-6:00 pm during the event for the public and there will also be salmon bake dinners available for race spectators, who can purchase a meal ticket from the Big Hurt beer garden. Big Hurt is honored to receive this gift from the Elwha River Casino.
You will be sure to enjoy the music of local talents with members of Crushwater, Scott Sullivan and Chandra Johnson as they play original songs with vocals that interlace harmony and interwoven male/female lyrical interplay, enraptured by a bed of lush violin, full harmonies, resonant guitar and driving rhythms.
Bonus! Earlier in the day, enjoy the fun percussion party music with Zaya Marimba while you watch the racers transition in the Zone . You can catch their high-energy performance between 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.
Nothing like a good tune and glass of cold beer to celebrate your day of pushing your bodies through dirt, rocks, trees, water, and pavement. The Big Hurt beer garden will be open from 1:00 pm -6:00 pm as part of the Big Hurt festivities. The beer garden is sponsored by Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club, Barhop Brewing, and Finnriver Farm & Cidery. Each participant and volunteer will get one free celebratory beverage, but the beer garden sponsors will be on hand to provide more libations as needed! Please bring cash for additional beer purchase. Open to the public.
Word on the streets is that we will be getting a special guest appearance by the Big Hurt legend himself, Charlie. Meet Charlie in person at the post-race party, and watch him give the first ever Legend Award to an unsuspecting athlete. Who is Charlie you ask? Find out more…
See you at the Big Hurt, the place that Legends are made.
